Cyclone Fengal: Frequency reduction of EMU in Chennai’s Suburban Section

Chennai: As Cyclone Fengal strengthened over the Bay of Bengal, which is scheduled to make landfall tomorrow, the suburban train operations in Chennai were partially affected. It is due to safety precautions for passengers and because the Southern Railways stated difficulties faced because of the weather as a reason for the EMU train service frequency being scaled down on the city’s suburban network.

In anticipation that there will be heavy rains along with gale force winds, services of trains on key routes, namely Chennai Beach–Tambaram, Chennai Central–Arakkonam, and Chennai Beach–Velachery, would operate at lesser intervals.

Advance precautions in view of passenger safety.

Southern Railway officials said that the service was stopped to avoid accidents caused by strong winds leading to potential floods, slippery tracks, and fallen debris. The railway has instructed passengers to stay updated through official channels on train schedules and avoid unnecessary travel until the weather gets better.

Maintenance teams are on the lookout for monitoring and taking action on waterlogging on tracks and electrical systems to function properly. More staff have been sent to deal with crowd control and help passengers during this time.

Public Transport Faces Wider Disruptions

Apart from suburban rail services, road transport in Chennai has also been hit. Several parts of the city have witnessed traffic snarls owing to waterlogging due to the heavy rain. The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) has diverted or temporarily withdrawn a few bus services from low-lying areas.

Chennai Metro Rail, though, is operating with increased vigilance at regular weather updates and having additional staff presence to regulate passengers.

Advisory for Commuters

Suburban train commuters have been asked to advance their journey, monitor changes in schedules, and exercise care in reaching stations. Southern Railway has coordinated with the state disaster management team in preparing to evacuate on short notice, if needed.

As Cyclone Fengal makes landfall, Chennai continues to be on tenterhooks with officials striving hard to reduce disruption and keep citizens safe through all forms of transportation.
