New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday issued a stern warning against crimes targeting women, labeling them as an “unpardonable sin” during his address at the ‘Lakhpati Didi Sammelan.’ The event, held in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, served as a platform for Modi to emphasize that the safety of women must be prioritised at all levels of society.

Modi’s comments come in the wake of several high-profile incidents, including the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata and the shocking sexual abuse cases involving young girls in Badlapur. These incidents have sparked nationwide outrage, prompting the Prime Minister to address the issue head-on.

“The safety of mothers, sisters, and daughters is the country’s priority,” Modi stated. “I have raised this issue repeatedly from the Red Fort, and today, I want to reiterate that crimes against women are unforgivable. The guilty must be punished, and there should be no leniency for those who aid such crimes.”

In his speech, Modi called for collective responsibility, urging both society and the government to take these issues seriously. He pointed out that negligence at any level—whether in hospitals, schools, or within government institutions—must not be tolerated. “Everyone should be held accountable,” he said, emphasizing that ensuring justice for victims should be a swift and uncompromising process.

Beyond addressing crime, Modi also highlighted the critical role of women in India’s economic development. He referenced the success of the Lakhpati Didi scheme, which supports women in self-help groups to become economically independent. The Prime Minister lauded the progress made under his administration, noting that since 2014, over ₹9 lakh crore in loans have been extended to women self-help groups—a significant increase from the less than ₹25,000 crore before his tenure.

“Women guarantee the prosperity of every home and every family,” Modi asserted. He further connected the empowerment of women to India’s ambitions of becoming the world’s third-largest economy, underscoring that such economic goals are only achievable through the active participation of empowered women.

Modi’s remarks underline a broader message: crimes against women are not just legal violations but societal failings that require urgent and collective action. His government’s commitment to women’s safety and empowerment, as articulated in his speech, sets a clear expectation for the nation to follow suit.
