Cocaine worth 60 crore found hidden in chocolates, golden foil at Chennai airport

Chennai airport

Chennai airport officials have uncovered one of the city’s biggest drug hauls in recent times, seizing cocaine valued at nearly ₹60 crore. What shocked investigators was the way it had been concealed — tucked away inside chocolate boxes and wrapped neatly in golden foil, almost as if it were part of an expensive gift hamper.

A routine check turns into a major catch

The discovery happened during what seemed like a normal baggage screening of parcels that had arrived from South America. At first glance, everything looked ordinary — cartons filled with food packets. But customs officers grew suspicious when they noticed that some of the boxes were unusually heavy. A closer scan confirmed their doubts, and when they opened the packages, cocaine packets were found carefully layered beneath the chocolates and foil.

Smugglers’ clever disguise

Investigators believe the traffickers banked on the assumption that chocolates would rarely be checked thoroughly. Wrapping the narcotics in golden foil added to the illusion that the packages were harmless. Officials said this is not the first time such creative methods have been used — in the past, drugs have been found hidden inside fruit boxes, cosmetic bottles and even electronic gadgets.

International cartel suspected

Preliminary reports indicate that the consignment may have originated in Latin America, a region notorious for large-scale cocaine trafficking. Chennai was possibly being used as a gateway before the narcotics could be moved to other parts of India. Agencies are now working with international counterparts to trace the exact route and identify the masterminds behind the operation.

Detentions and probe ahead

Two people linked to the shipment have already been detained, officials confirmed. They are currently being questioned to find out who in India was meant to receive the drugs and how wide the network stretches. Given the sheer value of the consignment, both the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) are expected to step in for a deeper investigation.

Growing trend of airport smuggling

Experts warn that smugglers are constantly refining their techniques, making detection harder. In the past, drugs have been caught disguised as liquids in perfume bottles or powders in spice packets. The Chennai seizure is a reminder of how vigilant authorities need to be as traffickers continue to look for loopholes.

Public caution advised

Officials have also issued an advisory, urging people to be careful while accepting international parcels from unknown senders. Many times, syndicates use innocent individuals or fake addresses to move shipments. For now, the bust at Chennai airport has dealt a heavy blow to the racket, preventing cocaine worth ₹60 crore from flooding the Indian market.
