CJI Forms 3-Member Panel to Investigate Charges Against Justice Yashwant Varma

Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna has set up a three-member committee to investigate charges against Justice Yashwant Varma of the Delhi High Court on the basis of reports of undeclared cash found at his residence after a fire. Creation of the Inquiry Committee The members include:  • Justice Sheel Nagu: Chief Justice, Punjab & Haryana High Court • Justice G.S. Sandhawalia: Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court • Justice Anu Sivaraman: Judge of the Karnataka High Court This committee has been entrusted to perform an in-depth investigation into the charges against Justice Varma.

Reasons for the Inquiry

The charges came after a fire at Justice Varma’s official bungalow in Lutyens’ Delhi on March 14, 2025, at about 11:35 PM. Firefighters quickly put out the fire, which was said to be limited to a storage room filled with stationery and household goods. Follow-up reports indicated the finding of a large sum of unaccounted money at the site, leading to further investigation.

Immediate Actions Taken

In response to the same, CJI Khanna instructed Delhi High Court Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya not to allocate any judicial work to Justice Varma while the investigation was underway. Secondly, the report filed by Chief Justice Upadhyaya and Justice Varma’s reply, along with the supporting documents, are to be made available for public viewing on the Supreme Court website.

Clarification on Justice Varma’s Transfer

In the wake of rumors connecting Justice Varma’s transfer to the allegations, the Supreme Court clarified that the suggestion to move him back to his parent High Court in Allahabad is not connected to the ongoing investigation. The proposal for his transfer was discussed on March 20, 2025, by the Collegium and is separate from the present investigation.

Background of Justice Yashwant Varma

Justice Varma was transferred to the Delhi High Court on October 11, 2021, after serving as an additional judge at the Allahabad High Court from October 13, 2014, and a permanent judge since February 1, 2016. He was also the second senior-most judge at the Delhi High Court. The three-member committee will hold a thorough investigation into the allegations leveled against Justice Varma. Upon finalization, the findings of the committee will be scrutinized to establish further action needed to maintain the integrity of the judiciary.
