In a brazen attack captured on CCTV, five armed men calmly entered Paras Hospital in Patna on Thursday morning. Wearing casual clothes, they strolled through the corridor, pulled concealed handguns, and entered Room 209. Within moments, they opened fire, fatally wounding a person receiving mental health treatment and well-known gangster Chandan Mishra, before walking out as if nothing had happened. Multiple individuals were inside the ward, yet nobody tried to stop them, and the gunmen escaped in seconds.
Victim Admitted on Medical Parole
Chandan Mishra, aged around 36, was serving a life sentence in a high-profile murder case dating back to 2011. He has also faced numerous charges, including extortion, robbery, and gang conflicts. Mishra was present at this private hospital on 15-day medical parole due to liver issues. The fatal shooting happened around 7:15 AM during his ICU stay, cutting short his parole period.
Gang Rivalry Suspected as Motive
Police investigating the incident suspect that the murder resulted from escalating gang tensions—particularly between Mishra and a rival group led by a figure known as “Sheru.” According to senior officers, the assailants conducted detailed reconnaissance before the attack, using a service staircase to evade main security and enter the ICU zone undetected.
Serious Security Lapses Highlighted
The attack has exposed major weaknesses in hospital security. Despite having multiple CCTV cameras in the passage, there was no check on the men entering armed. Authorities are now scrutinizing staff behavior and possible collusion. A forensic squad, along with sniffer dogs, is canvassing the area for explosive evidence and fingerprints.
Political Uproar Erupts Over Law & Order
The incident has revived fierce debate over safety and governance in Bihar. Opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav strongly condemned the shooting, questioning whether any public space is safe. In response, the ruling party reminded critics about past similar cases under previous governments. The incident has revived calls for stronger law-and-order interventions and systemic reform.
Police Launch Manhunt
A case has been registered at Shastri Nagar police station, and investigators are poring over video footage, traffic logs, and witness testimonies. Reports suggest the suspects fled towards Buxar via two vehicles. Several people have already been taken in for questioning, and efforts to locate all five men are underway.
This shocking daylight killing inside a hospital has jolted public confidence and underlined the urgent need for tighter security standards among the public.
