Heavy rainfall has been predicted by the India Meteorological Department for the next 48 hours, enveloping Chennai and several parts of Tamil Nadu. With an orange alert in effect, authorities and residents have been advised to prepare for possible disruptions due to the strengthening weather system along the coast of Tamil Nadu.
IMD Warns of Widespread Rainfall
The IMD’s latest bulletin said the developing low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal will bring heavy to very heavy rain over coastal and interior districts. The chief areas likely to be affected include Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Tiruvallur, Nagapattinam, and Puducherry.
Chennai has been receiving intermittent rain over the last couple of days and this is likely to be followed by heavy spells interspersed with strong winds, lightning, and waterlogging in low-lying areas. The Met department has also asked fishermen not to venture into the sea due to rough conditions.
Government, Civic Bodies on Alert
Following the alert, Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority and local civic bodies have stepped up preparations. Pumping stations are on standby, and stormwater drains are being monitored to prevent flooding. Greater Chennai Corporation has deployed rapid-response teams to clear fallen trees, drain water, and assist residents in vulnerable zones.
Some districts may announce holidays for schools and colleges as a precautionary measure if the rainfall increases, though decisions will be officially taken according to the real-time situation.
Public Warned to Remain Vigilant
IMD has asked citizens to stay indoors as much as possible during intense spells and avoid waterlogged roads. People residing near the riverbanks, lakes, and flood-prone areas have been asked to stay alert for any emergency instructions.
Experts point out that while the rain will alleviate the humidity, it also threatens to cause traffic disruptions, power cuts, and localized flooding—all problems Chennai faces during every monsoon season.
What to Expect Next
The rainfall activity is likely to continue through the weekend with the IMD predicting a gradual decline by early next week. However, officials said that the situation might change quickly should the low-pressure system gain strength. For now, Tamil Nadu, particularly Chennai, stays on high alert as people prepare for another spell of heavy monsoon rain.
