Manipur: Amid rising violence in Manipur, the Center has beefed up the force with 20 more companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), involving about 2,000 personnel to the current presence. This is after a spate of attacks in Jiribam district, including a deadly clash on Monday during which militants fired at Borobekra police station and an adjacent camp of the CRPF. In retaliation, the security forces killed at least ten militants and seized a consignment of high-end weapons.

Fresh Developments and Response

The ravage in Jiribam has intensified the whole scenario in Manipur. According to Indian reports, the fight was armed in Imphal Valley. On realizing that the law and order scenario was becoming critical, the Ministry of Home Affairs directed immediate airlifting and deploying additional forces. The forces include 15 units of CRPF, 5 units of BSF, along with 198 companies already present in the state due to ethnic tussles.

Extended Deployment Probable

These reinforcements will remain in Manipur at least till November 30, with further deployment likely dependent on circumstances. Violence has been continuously unleashed since ethnic clashes began in May 2023, claiming over 200 lives and leaving thousands displaced.

Wider Implications

The fresh violence reiterates the fragile peace in Manipur, which tells much about the need for sustained efforts to restore normalcy and resolve underlying ethnic tensions. The central government’s prompt action reflects the commitment of the Center to stabilizing the region, amidst recurring turmoil.
