A new political row broke out in Tamil Nadu when Chief Minister MK Stalin boycotted a big-ticket government event where Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the guest of honor. The BJP condemned the DMK leader for intentionally insulting the Prime Minister by boycotting the event, describing his no-show as “disrespectful and politically motivated.”
BJP: ‘CM Stalin owes an explanation to the people’
BJP senior leader and Union Minister L. Murugan widely condemned the no-show by Stalin, saying it was not a political event. It was a state function in which the Prime Minister came to inaugurate big infrastructure projects that benefited the people of Tamil Nadu. The CM’s absence sends wrong signals and reflects the arrogance of the DMK.
He also added that protocol requires the Chief Minister to be present when the Prime Minister comes to visit a state for an official ceremony. “By not attending, MK Stalin has humiliated not only PM Modi but also the people of Tamil Nadu,” Murugan said.
DMK justifies Stalin’s itinerary
In response to the charges, officials in the DMK explained that Stalin was holding a pre-drafted cabinet meeting and had appointed senior ministers to represent the state government in attending the event. This is being politicized unnecessarily. “The CM holds the office of the Prime Minister in high regard, but the BJP is attempting to draw political mileage from ordinary administrative events,” said a DMK spokesperson.
Opposition terms it ‘deliberate snub’
BJP state president K. Annamalai too jumped in and alleged Stalin’s no-show to be a “deliberate snub to Prime Minister Modi.” He could have altered his schedule if he wanted. “Fact is, Stalin doesn’t respect national leadership unless it feeds into his political agenda,” alleged Annamalai.
He further mentioned how Stalin has always missed PM Modi events and identified this as being a “pattern of disrespect”.
Political temperatures heat up before polls
The controversy comes in the wake of increased political activity in Tamil Nadu before the Lok Sabha polls. The BJP is attempting to make its presence felt in the southern state, where the DMK continues to be a strong force.
As tensions mount, analysts think this incident will be utilized by the BJP to challenge the DMK’s national perspective and allegiance to constitutional mechanisms in their future electioneering. The matter also has the potential to widen current fissures between the Center and the government of Tamil Nadu.
