A devastating train accident took place late Friday night in Chhattisgarh’s Bilaspur district when a passenger train collided with a stationary goods train, leaving several passengers injured, besides raising serious concerns over railway safety and signal management. The collision occurred near Belsonda station, approximately 30 kilometers from Bilaspur, on the busy Bilaspur–Raipur route.
The Accident
Preliminary reports said the passenger train, heading towards Raipur, rammed into a goods train parked on the same track. The impact of the collision was severe, causing multiple coaches to derail and creating panic among passengers. The eyewitnesses said that, running at considerable speed, the passenger train had failed to stop and slammed into the stationary rake before the driver could apply the brakes.
Rescue Operations
Rescue and relief efforts began soon after the accident. The RPF, local police, as well as teams of the NDRF, reached the site to undertake the rescue work. Injured passengers were rushed to nearby hospitals in Bilaspur and Raipur, while passengers trapped inside damaged coaches were rescued with the help of gas cutters. Official confirmation of causalities is still awaited; however, a number of passengers have been seriously injured. For such eventualities, emergency helplines were also made operational.
Possible Cause and Probe
Initial investigations indicate a probable signal failure or communication breakdown between the control center and the locomotive driver. Some sources suggest that the malfunctioning automatic signal system could have given a false “clear” indication to the passenger train. The Railway Ministry ordered a high-level inquiry into whether the cause was a technical glitch or human error. A special team of engineers and safety officers was sent to inspect the site and analyze the signal system data.
Train Services Disrupted
The collision led to a major disruption in services across the Bilaspur–Raipur section. Many long-distance trains were either delayed or diverted, while rail traffic on the route was temporarily suspended as cranes and rescue teams worked through the night to clear the wreckage and restore normal operations.
Official Reactions
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has expressed concern over the mishap and ordered the senior officials to ensure medical assistance for the injured. The railways have also announced ex-gratia compensation for victims and their families. The Bilaspur tragedy has again highlighted that improved safety protocols, regular maintenance of signals, and closer monitoring are immediate needs to avoid the recurrence of such rail accidents anywhere in the country.
