Islamabad, Pakistan — During his official visit to Pakistan, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko avoided speaking out about the long-standing Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan. His decision not to bring up the issue of Kashmir in his meetings with the Pakistani leadership has been criticized since the region is very geopolitically important and central to Pakistan’s foreign policy.
Lukashenko’s visit, which took place early in November 2024, was aimed at increasing the bilateral relations between Belarus and Pakistan in the areas of trade, defense, and technology. However, a very sensitive and contentious issue between Pakistan and India-Kashmir-was also discussed during the diplomatic talks.
A Sensitive Situation for Belarus
It is one of the areas under dispute between Pakistan and India since the partition of British India in 1947, where both countries claim this region in full but possess only a part of it. Since then, the country of Pakistan has pursued international support for its claim on Kashmir, which appeals for the self-determination of the region, and India maintains that it forms an integral part of Indian territory.
Belarus, a strategic ally of Russia and an impartial player in South Asian geopolitics, has so far taken a cautious diplomatic approach on the Kashmir issue. Some foreign affairs advisors have said that Lukashenko’s reluctance to comment on the issue can be viewed as a strategy not, to provoke India as Belarus also shares good relations with India and it has traditionally been a vocal supporter of India’s sovereignty over Kashmir, which is similar to the Russian position.
