A July 9 Bharat Bandh or nationwide strike has been called by several trade unions with the support of farmer organizations. The strike is being called to bring to the fore dissatisfaction with increasing unemployment, new labor legis
lation, and so-called privatization of government services. The big unions assert that more than 25 crore workers from various industries have joined them in making one of the largest strike calls in recent memory.
Government Services and Banking Likely to Get Affected
Employees from government post offices, insurance companies, and public sector banks have indicated high participation in the strike through their unions. Consequently, government services such as bank transactions, cheque processing, and customer support in government offices might be delayed or be suspended in some areas. ATMs, however, are likely to operate as usual, except in areas affected by physical protests or roadblocks.
No School, College or Private Office Closure Announced
There is no word on any official announcement about the closure of educational institutions or private firms for the day. Schools and colleges will function normally, although students and faculty might be delayed in traveling if their locality witnesses active protest campaigns. Similarly, private offices and retail businesses are not likely to shut down unless disrupted locally.
Transportation May Be Disrupted in Crucial States
Public transport can experience partial shutdown, particularly in areas or states where trade unions are influential. This includes possible delays or cancellations of bus, auto, and taxi operations. The metro networks and the railways have not announced a shutdown, but rail blockades or sit-ins at stations can disrupt operations. Air services are likely to stay unaffected, although passengers are warned to depart early owing to potential traffic congestion.
Power and Essential Services to Continue Functioning
While unions have also asked power sector workers to go on strike, there is no word yet of scheduled outages. Hospital services, emergency teams, pharmacies, and utilities will operate normally.
