The Maha Kumbh festival, which was organized earlier this year in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, saw a tragic event occur that has ever since led to political controversy. Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav has accused that more than 1,000 Hindu pilgrims are still unaccounted for after the festival. This allegation has further fueled debate about the management of the festival and the role of the state government.

Allegations of Missing Devotees

Akhilesh Yadav, speaking to the media, said, “Even today, 1,000 Hindus are missing from the Kumbh whose whereabouts are unknown.” He faulted the Uttar Pradesh government for supposedly taking down missing persons’ posters in Prayagraj, implying there was no sincere effort to find the missing people. Yadav called on the government to help the missing devotees’ families and be transparent about their whereabouts. я┐╝ я┐╝ я┐╝

Issues regarding Event Management

Apart from the issue of missing individuals, Yadav was not satisfied with how the Maha Kumbh was managed in general. He mentioned that during the event, “People were being stopped at the borders.” Yadav also raised an issue regarding the distribution of resources, asking how much money was allocated by the central government for the event. He pointed out that the Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh chief ministers were more concerned about vehicle parking facilities, while pilgrims had to undergo considerable hardships.

Political Reactions

The claims have evoked responses from different political leaders. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi pointed out that though Prime Minister Narendra Modi had eulogized the Maha Kumbh in his parliamentary speech, “he did not offer condolences to people who lost their lives in Kumbh.” Gandhi even criticized the refusal to give permission to opposition leaders to respond to the Prime Minister’s speech, implying an oppression of opposing voices.

Government’s Stance

As a reaction to the claims, the Uttar Pradesh government has accepted the horrific stampede that took place during the Maha Kumbh, killing at least 30 people and injuring 60 others. The state government has ordered an investigation, with a retired judge tasked with presenting the report within a month. But the government has not made a formal statement about the particular claims of missing devotees.

The controversy surrounding the Maha Kumbh festival underscores the challenges of managing large-scale religious events. The reported disappearance of over 1,000 devotees, if substantiated, raises serious concerns about public safety and event oversight. As investigations proceed, it is imperative for the authorities to provide clear information, support affected families, and implement measures to prevent such tragedies in future gatherings.
