Delhi: Amidst the pollution crisis, the Central Government has come out with a decision to change the work timings for government employees to tackle traffic congestion and reduce air pollution. They have taken the decision after the severe condition of deteriorated air quality in Delhi as the AUR Quality Index has hit the noxious level of over 420 in some areas of the capital. Delhi Chief Minister Atishi announced that staggered office timings would be implemented for MCD employees, Delhi government employees, and employees of central government offices. The new office hours will be as follows:
MCD offices : 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM
Delhi Government offices: 10:00 AM to 6:30 PM
Central government offices: Timings need to be readjusted according to the operational requirement
This is as per the GRAP-3 measures currently implemented in NCR, which include these restrictive measures on construction activities and vehicular usage to check the level of pollution.
Background and Concerns
Delhi’s air quality has progressively worsened season after season because of the burning of stubble, vehicular emissions, and industrial pollutants. Issues were fresh enough to call for the imposition of GRAP Stage 3 measures, which ban non-essential construction and impose much stricter traffic rules.
Atishi underlined that staggering working hours would drastically reduce peak-hour traffic congestion, and thereby lower vehicular emissions – one of the major pollutants. The authorities are encouraging citizens to work from home and to use public transport whenever they can.
Safety plans and measures
These measures are likely to stay until February 28, 2025, and the authorities will keep a close eye on the pollution levels. Experts have also sought long-term solutions infrastructure of public transport, stricter emission standards, and large green cover in the city.
People have been advised to stay inside and to reduce daily outdoor activities to be safe from the hazardous level of pollution, use masks and purifiers for air intake, and so on, for their own safety. The government continuously assesses the effectiveness of these measures in reducing the levels of pollution.
