Air India Cancels 8 Flights Today; Bookings Fall Up to 20% After Ahmedabad Crash

Air India 2

Air India canceled eight flights, including four international ones, on June 20 due to increased maintenance and operational considerations. This is after the June 12 Boeing 787 Dreamliner crash in Ahmedabad that killed 241 people.

Steep Fall in Ticket Demand

Industry estimates indicate a 20% decline in bookings on both domestic and international Air India flights. International bookings have dipped by 18–22%, whereas domestic bookings are down 10–12%. Tour operators experienced an upsurge in cancellations—particularly from corporate and high-end leisure travelers—switching to other airlines.

Fare Cuts Implemented

To offset the drop in demand, Air India cut prices to remain competitive. Domestic fare prices fell by 8–12%, and international fares were reduced by as much as 15% in certain markets .

Fleet Checks and Capacity Cuts

The DGCA keeps up intense inspections on the about 33-strong Boeing 787 fleet. As of June 18, 24 planes have been approved, two having been grounded in Delhi. Air India, meanwhile, has reduced overseas wide-body operations by some 15% for a number of weeks, expanding identical checks to its Boeing 777s.

Balancing Safety with Service

In a letter to passengers, CEO Campbell Wilson guaranteed that all impacted travelers would either be refunded or rebooked, and detailed the additional inspection processes .

What It Means for Passengers

The cancellations today include flights such as AI906 (Dubai–Chennai), AI308/309 (Delhi–Melbourne return), AI2204 (Dubai–Hyderabad), and domestic segments like Pune–Delhi and Ahmedabad–Delhi.

With bookings off and prices reduced, travelers can get a good bargain—but need to double-check schedules because of continued flight modifications.

Final Take
Air India’s recent policy—canceling flights and reducing fares—represents a cautious attempt to re-establish trust following the Dreamliner crash. Safety checks are, of course, given precedence and result in service disruptions, but the temporary dip in bookings might be offset if checks wrap up soon and Confidence is restored.
