AAP alleges police harassment of its workers against the backdrop of political tensions in Delhi.

Madhurima 15

Delhi: With the Delhi assembly elections fast approaching on February 5, 2025, the political environment has grown more volatile. The latest incident has pushed the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to a further boiling point. AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal has publicly alleged that Union Home Minister Amit Shah is behind the police actions against AAP workers, indicating that such steps reflect the BJP’s nervousness about the electoral outcome.

The Incident

On January 22, 2025, Arvind Kejriwal posted a video on social media in which it is seen that Delhi Police personnel are forcing AAP workers out of a peaceful sit-in. This footage has people being forcibly taken away from the spot by police. Kejriwal condemned these forces, saying, “Amit Shah ji has gone completely berserk. Amit ji, you might have managed to indulge in hooliganism in Gujarat, but Delhi will never allow your hooliganism.”

Allegations of Political Intimidation

Sanjay Singh, AAP’s senior leader, shares Kejriwal’s feelings that the BJP is misusing the law enforcement agencies for threatening the supporters of AAP because of their fear of losing the election. He raised a case wherein the Delhi Police had conducted a raid on AAP worker Bunty Shekhawat’s house located in the BR Camp area in New Delhi constituency. According to him, it was a sheer abuse of authority, as this kind of exercise had been done solely to depress the grassroots campaigners of AAP.

BJP Reaction

In reply to the accusations, the BJP has responded that the charges levied against it by AAP are frivolous and politically motivated. It claimed that police responses to breaches of public order are normal and in no way a product of any political decision-making. The BJP holds itself above all blame regarding fair democratic election practices and attributes to AAP an incidence of fake complaints about gaining sympathy votes.

Backdrops of Growing Tensions

This is the setting in which this confrontation is taking place-between two parties whose tensions and confrontation are now on the rise. Weeks back, in the early month of January 2025, BJP workers staged the ‘Purvanchal Samman March’ to protest against the alleged derogatory remarks attributed to the AAP leaders against the Purvanchal community. This protest led to clashing with the police at Kejriwal’s residence, and the police resorted to using water cannons and made many detentions.

As the election date draws near, the political rhetoric in Delhi is getting more and more heated. The recent allegations and confrontations only go to show how high the stakes are and how deep the rivalries between AAP and BJP run. Observers are watching closely, knowing that the actions and narratives adopted by both parties in these final days could make all the difference in voter perceptions and, ultimately, the election outcome.
