21 kids die due to Cough Syrup Tragedy in Madhya Pradesh Pradesh; CM Yadav Admits ‘Lapses’

MP News 1

The Madhya Pradesh cough syrup tragedy has turned sinister, with 21 confirmed deaths, as two more deaths are reported from Morena and Sheopur districts. The deaths, attributed to a suspected poisonous batch of cough syrup, have caused public anger and forced the state government to acknowledge serious bureaucratic flaws in drug monitoring and supply.

New Deaths Cause Panic Across Districts

The new victims were reported late Monday evening from Sheopur and Morena rural health centres where a few children had been kept under observation after they drank the same syrup brand, said officials. The samples of the tainted batch have been released for detailed chemical analysis at Bhopal’s forensic lab. Preliminary reports indicated high levels of contaminants in the bottle, which are suspected to have caused the deadly reactions.

District hospitals have now been directed to withdraw all batches of the suspect cough syrup forthwith, and pharmacies have been advised to suspend sale until further notice. Health squads are also carrying out door-to-door inspections to locate any outstanding bottles in the market.

CM Yadav Takes Responsibility

In a rare admission, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav spoke about the issue, stating, “We cannot deny that there were lapses at various levels. Accountability will be addressed, and those who are guilty will be strictly punished.”

He also declared ₹5 lakh ex-gratia to the kin of the deceased children and assured that the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) has been notified for a countrywide review of the manufacturer’s products.

Manufacturer Under Scrutiny

The Indore-based manufacturer of the cough syrup has been severely questioned. The state drug control department has sealed its production unit pending inquiry and called its directors for questioning.

The authorities suspect the involvement of diethylene glycol (DEG) or ethylene glycol, both poisonous substances that have led to such disasters in nations such as Gambia and Uzbekistan.

Public Anger and Central Intervention

As protests broke out in Bhopal and Gwalior, parents called for an immediate arrest and statewide audit of over-the-counter syrups. The Union Health Ministry has asked Madhya Pradesh to file a detailed report and could soon order nationwide testing for pediatric drugs.

Health experts have termed the tragedy a wake-up call for India’s drug control system, calling for stricter quality control to ensure that “life-saving syrups don’t become life-taking poisons.”
