Due to maintenance work proposed by the Delhi Jal Board, large parts of Delhi will have no water supply for 12 hours on Friday, October 20, 2024. In this regard, the supply will be affected from 11 AM to 11 PM in various localities across the city. This is part of the constant effort to repair pipelines and upgrade infrastructure in order to distribute water at a later stage with minimal grievances pertaining to supply.
Areas to be Affected:
Areas likely to be worst affected by this disruption include Civil Lines, Kamla Nagar, Shakti Nagar, Karol Bagh, Paharganj, Old and New Rajinder Nagar, Patel Nagar, Baljeet Nagar, Prem Nagar, and Inderpuri. Water shortages will also occur in the cantonment areas and partly in localities falling in South Delhi under NDMC.
Reasons for the Disruption
The DJB explained that these disruptions are necessary to replace the old pipelines of water and carry out repairs, wherever necessary. This will ensure no leakage of water in the future and an uninterrupted supply of clean water to these areas once the repairs are done. Major pipeline repairs at Chandrawal Water Works are among the crucial ones that are essential for the city’s water supply.
Advisory to Residents
Accordingly, the DJB has recommended that people stock up adequate water in advance to fulfill their daily requirements during the disruption. The water tankers will, however, be provided on request for the people at large, which can be availed through DJB’s helpline number. People are also advised to use the water judiciously during this period in order to avoid unnecessary hardship.
Looking Ahead
After repairs, the water supply will return to normal pressure and become more reliable for those areas. Such maintenance, though troublesome in the immediate future, is important to be regularly carried out to ensure the very long-term functioning of Delhi’s water supply network.
This incident showcases the infrastructure in India’s capital and what is being done to remedy such incidents.
