Good news for all practitioners of yoga. The age-old practice, now in vogue in India, will be included at the 202 Asian Games in Japan. The campaign to include yoga was led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself and it then percolated down from the office of the Indian Olympic Association, led by President PT Usha.
With acting Olympic Council of Asia President Raja Randhir Singh playing an active role as well, yoga being included first as a demonstration sport is a step in the right direction. It is well known, India has played a big role in the promotion of yoga. That yoga has spread all over and people overseas have also adopted it is a sign of how in terms of fitness and well being, this is important.
A letter was written by IOA President Usha to the OCA in the end of June, requesting that yoga be included as a sport. The first step will be to showcase it in Nagoya in 2026. From an exhibition sport and then demonstration sport and then become a competitive sport, there are various stages which have to be gone through.
New Delhi will be hosting the Olympic Council of Asia session from September 6 to 8, and there could be further discussion on yoga as well. Elections to the OCA will be held in New Delhi and it is expected Randhir Singh will be a front runner to become President.
At a time when India has aspirations of hosting the Olympics in 2036, the OCA session is also important. An Asian Games in India is not on the cards at present but anything can happen in the next few years.
For the record, many yoga associations, at the Asian level and world level have also written that it be included in the Asian Games. New Delhi hosted the first Asian Games in 1951.
