21 st September is celebrated as world Alzheimer’s day.
Theme
Every year this day or month is celebrated with a theme.
This year’s theme is “know dementia , know Alzheimer’s”.
It is same as 2021 , however the emphasis is more on post-diagnosis support.
What is Alzheimer’s ?
- Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive brain disease. It starts with forgetting things and develops short memory loss which results in difficulty in remembering recent events, eventually resulting in the inability to look after daily activities and even basic needs.
- Alzheimer’s disease mostly affects elderly people.
- India has a huge population of elderly people and thus it’s our duty to be more aware about the disease.
- Curing Alzheimer’s requires not only medical help but a lot of family and social support.
The American Alzheimer’s Association, based in Chicago, Illinois, chose purple as the ribbon colour for representing Alzheimer’s.
Why purple ?
It combines the calm stability of blue and the passionate energy of red.
Purple makes a statement about the strong and unrelenting in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease.”
Symbol

Why is this day important ?
- It brings people together.
- It helps spread awareness about the disease.
- It provides valuable education
- It also provides recognition to organizations working for this disease.
