😳WHY❓❓❓
=================
The immersion of a Ganesha idol in water, a ritual known as “Visarjan,” at the end of the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, holds significant spiritual and symbolic meaning. While the festival can last for varying lengths of time, often up to 10 days, the immersion is a key part of the tradition.
Primary reasons behind this practice:
Symbolism of the life cycle : The ritual symbolizes the cycle of creation, preservation, and dissolution in nature. Lord Ganesha is believed to have been created by Goddess Parvati from clay and brought to life. The immersion of the clay idol into water signifies his return to his formless state, representing the ephemeral nature of life and the ultimate return to the earth from which all things originate. The chant “Ganpati Bappa Morya, Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar Ya,” which means “O god Ganesha, come early next year!”, reinforces the cyclical nature of the event.
Purification of water : As per Hindu beliefs, the idols, which are infused with divine consciousness during the rituals, purify the water they are immersed in. This purified water, in turn, spreads the divine energy far and wide, benefiting many people and the atmosphere.
A cultural and historical tradition: The large-scale public celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi, including the grand processions and Visarjan, was popularized by Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak in the late 19th century to unite people and foster a sense of national identity against British rule.
It is important to note that, idols made from natural clay and non-toxic paints to prevent water pollution and protect the environment. Some communities also use designated artificial ponds for immersion to minimize the impact on natural bodies of water.
