In a unique initiative this Ganeshotsav, Gleneagles Hospital, Mumbai has partnered with the Lalbaugcha Raja Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal to raise awareness about the importance of organ donation. A special pledge stall has been set up at the mandal, where lakhs of devotees will have the opportunity to learn about organ donation, register, and pledge to give the gift of life.

Organ donation is a selfless act that can save lives. According to the Zonal Transplant Co-ordination Centre (ZTCC) 2025 data, the number of donors was 27, 40 received kidney transplants, 26 liver transplants, 10 heart transplants, 2 lung transplants, 2 pancreas transplants, 2 small bowel transplants, and 1 single hand transplant. Total organ transplants till 10 July, 2025 were 83. The data also revealed that in 1997, the number of donors was merely 4. This number increased to 79 in 2019. In 2024, the figure stood at 60, while by July 2025, it was 27. From 1997 to 2025, a total of 1,185 kidney transplants, 579 liver transplants, 5 kidney + liver transplants, 266 heart transplants, 55 lung transplants, 5 heart + lung transplants, 1 heart + kidney transplant, 2 heart + liver transplants, 14 kidney + pancreas transplants, 1 pancreas transplant, 11 small bowel transplants, and 15 hand transplants have been performed.

India continues to face a huge gap between patients awaiting transplants and available donors. Lack of awareness and hesitation to pledge remain key barriers. This collaboration aims to bridge that gap by inspiring devotees during one of Mumbai’s most celebrated festivals.

Dr. Bipin Chevale, CEO, Gleneagles Hospital Mumbai, said, “Organ donation is the greatest gift one can give. Just as Lord Ganesha removes obstacles, pledging organs can remove the biggest obstacle for patients battling organ failure — the wait for a second chance at life. Making this pledge in front of Bappa adds a sacred meaning to this noble cause.”

Mr. Sudhir Salve, Trustee, Lalbaugcha Raja Mandal, added: “Lakhs of devotees come here with prayers in their hearts. Through this initiative, they can also spread hope for others by pledging their organs. We are proud to support this life-saving mission.”

This Ganeshotsav, Gleneagles Hospital and Lalbaugcha Raja Mandal urge devotees to turn faith into action by pledging for organ donation, giving many patients a chance at a healthier, renewed life
