COVID-19 Cases Witness Scary Spurt. 3,758 New Infections Detected Across India

Covid 19

India saw a steep rise in cases of COVID-19, with 3,758 fresh infections in the last 24 hours, as per the latest figures available by the health ministry. This abrupt surge has made health authorities and the common person agitated, particularly as Kerala and Karnataka each logged one death due to the virus at the same time.

Southern states on high alert

Kerala and Karnataka, two of the worst-hit states in previous waves of COVID-19, are again experiencing fresh pressure on their healthcare infrastructure. One death each was reported in both states on Saturday. Health officials have stepped up surveillance of high-risk patients and increased tests in high-risk areas. Hospitals have been directed to remain ready for an increase in admissions in case the trend catches up.

Variants and precautionary measures

Experts attribute the latest spike to new sub-variants of the Omicron virus, although the results of genome sequencing are yet to be done. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has asked people to be cautious but not panic. People have been instructed to wear a mask while going out in a crowded place, be hygienic with their hands, and self-isolate if symptoms are felt.

Testing and vaccination status

Though testing numbers have risen in the past few days, they are still lower than were recorded during previous waves of the pandemic. Officials have assured individuals with symptoms of flu to test themselves, especially those with comorbid conditions and elderly people. Booster doses for elderly people and health workers are also being reconsidered, with state governments requesting senior citizens and health workers to take booster doses. Even though a majority of the population is immunized, the decline in immunity over time is something experts have pointed out.

Centre-state coordination goes into overdrive

The Union Health Ministry has sent new advisories to state governments to prepare hospitals, oxygen supply availability, and stockpiling of critical medicines. State health departments have been ordered to carry out mock drills and assessments of preparedness, especially in districts reporting increasing positivity rates.

Citizens asked to be vigilant

While the peak is still not at alarming proportions against previous waves, the authorities are not taking any chances. Individuals are being reminded not to neglect any mild symptoms and to desist from any unnecessary trips or meetings if they feel unwell. With the situation unfolding, there are anticipated regular updates from health departments that are likely to inform public behavior as well as policy response in the next few days.
