PM Modi’s Diplomatic Advice to Putin and ‘Brother’ Zelensky: ‘Not the Time for War’

During a recent appearance on Lex Fridman’s podcast, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed his position with regard to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, as he stressed that diplomacy is vital over warfare. Talking to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Modi firmly said, “This is not the time for war,” requesting a halt to violence in favor of peaceful discussion. At the same time, he cautioned Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whom he addressed as a “brother,” that merely fighting on the ground would not create a solution for a sustained future, with him emphasizing the importance of communication. Consistent Calls for Peace

This is not the first time PM Modi has spoken out on behalf of peace between the two warring countries.

In September 2022, while in a meeting with President Putin, Modi stated that “today’s era is not an era of war,” which was a world sentiment that favors diplomacy over war. Further supporting India’s stance, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar observed that Modi’s exchanges with Putin and Zelensky were “beginnings of a communication process” towards finding a solution to the current crisis. India’s Neutral Stance and Humanitarian Support During the entire conflict, India has taken a neutral approach and has avoided siding with anyone. But PM Modi has remained persistent in voicing support for dialogue and diplomacy as the tools to achieve peace. In August 2024, while hosting President Zelensky in a meeting, Modi reiterated that India has remained at peace throughout and is resolved to support an early and peaceful solution to the conflict.

International Reactions and Implications

PM Modi’s foreign diplomacy has been recognized internationally, indicative of a wider aspiration for the end of conflict and the initiation of peace negotiations. His even-handed diplomacy, approaching both Russian and Ukrainian leadership, makes India a possible mediator in the conflict. The world is watching these developments with the hope that such diplomatic initiatives will open the door to lasting peace in the region.
