NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore are ready to come back to Earth after an unplanned nine-month stay on the International Space Station (ISS). Their mission, which was originally scheduled for only eight days, was extended because of technical issues with their initial spacecraft. As they prepare to head home, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sent warm wishes for their safe return.

Extended Stay Aboard the ISS

Williams and Wilmore’s mission started in June 2024 with the task of testing the new Boeing-built Starliner spacecraft on a short stay aboard the ISS. That changed, however, when there was an unexpected engine failure with the Starliner that required a mission extension. During this time, the two astronauts learned to live with their extended stay by conducting routine ISS tasks and undergoing strict exercise protocols to combat microgravity effects lasting more than normal.

Return through SpaceX Crew-9 Dragon Capsule

Due to the Starliner’s technical problems, NASA made arrangements for Williams and Wilmore’s return on the SpaceX Crew-9 Dragon capsule. The spacecraft left the ISS earlier today, embarking on a mission that is likely to end in a splashdown off the coast of Florida around 5:57 p.m. EDT (3:27 a.m. IST on March 19).

Prime Minister Modi’s Heartfelt Message

Accepting Sunita Williams’ Indian origins and space-exploring efforts, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote a heartfelt letter wishing her safe return. He called her “one of India’s most illustrious daughters” and offered an invitation to her to come to India once she returns. Prayers are also being said at the Dola Mata Temple in Jhulasan, Williams’ birth village in Gujarat, for the country’s shared wishes for her safe travel.

Expected Homecoming

On their return, Williams and Wilmore will receive medical checks and rehabilitation to acclimatize themselves to Earth’s gravity after the prolonged mission. Their endurance and flexibility during this unexpected extension testify to the dedication and commitment of astronauts towards developing human space exploration.

While the world waits anxiously for their safe return, the thoughts and prayers of numerous people, including Indians, go with the astronauts on their journey.
