1. The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) convened an informal, closed-door session on Monday, May 5, 2025, at Pakistan’s request, to deliberate on the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan following the deadly Pahalgam terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir.
2. India has halted water flow to Pakistan through the Baglihar dam on the Chenab River. The dam, located in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district, has previously led to disputes between New Delhi and Islamabad, with Pakistan seeking the World Bank’s arbitration.
3. Chenab River Runs Bone Dry As India Closes Baglihar, Salal Dams Amid Cross-Border Tensions. The Indus Waters Treaty, which includes the Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej rivers.The treaty divides usage rights between India and Pakistan, with Pakistan’s agriculture and economy heavily reliant on these river flows, particularly from the Chenab and Jhelum.
4. Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman led the Indian delegation at the 58th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in Milan, Italy, from May 4 to 7, 2025. Her delegation included officials from the Department of Economic Affairs and Ministry of Finance.
5. Russian President Vladimir Putin strongly condemned the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which targeted tourists and resulted in significant loss of life.In a direct conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Putin expressed “full support” to India in its fight against terrorism.
6. India and UK agree to mutually beneficial Free Trade Agreement and the Double Contribution Convention.
7. Qatar expresses full support to India in its fight against terrorism and all its actions to bring the perpetrators of Pahalgam attack to justice.
8. India has objected to the statement made by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation on Pahalgam terrorist attack. External Affairs Ministry’s spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, the OIC statement, issued at the behest of Pakistan, is absurd in refusing to recognise the facts of the Pahalgam terrorist attack and its cross-border linkages

2. Seven Pakistani paramilitary troops were killed and five others injured yesterday in a bomb attack on a convoy near the town of Mach in Kachhi district in southwestern Balochistan province.

In Sri Lanka’s local council election, the National People’s Power (NPP), led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, secured its first victory in Tangalle Urban Council, a Rajapaksa family stronghold. The NPP won 9 seats with 46% of the votes, while the main opposition, SJB, secured 5 seats. Voter turnout was high at 70.
