In Bangladesh, the 76th anniversary of the martyrdom of Mahatma Gandhi was observed at Gandhi Ashram in Noakhali and Jamalpur on Tuesday, 30 January. The Chairmen of the Gandhi Ashram Trust, Noakhali Jibon Kanai Dash and other trustees paid rich tributes to Gandhiji on his 76th death anniversary.

2. India has nominated the “Maratha Military Landscapes of India” for the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2024-25. The sites showcase the strategic military capabilities of the Maratha empire between the 17th and 19th centuries.

1. Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan sentenced to 10-year in prison for leaking state secrets. Ex-foreign Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Party vice-president Shah Mahmood Quresh also sentenced to 10 years in prison in the case.

2. United States President Joe Biden said on Tuesday (Jan 30) that he has decided how to respond to the drone attack on US troops in Jordan, which killed three service members. Biden also added that Iran is to blame for supplying weapons to the militant groups.
Tensions have escalated in the Middle East (West Asia) region, especially after the Jordan attack in the already unstable region after the October 7 Hamas attack.
3. Amid the opposition’s move to impeach Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, the ruling dispensation has taken its concerns over recent amendments to Parliament’s standing orders to the Supreme Court.

Maldives legislative body consisting of 87 members, recently amended its standing orders, simplifying the process of initiating an impeachment motion. Several pro-Muizzu lawmakers resigned from the Maldivian Parliament in November so that they could attain cabinet positions, however, the opposition amended the rules which barred these vacated seats when counting the total number of MPs. The amendment card played by the opposition reduced the required votes for impeachment from 58 to 54.

4. North Korea has carried out a third test of its cruise missiles in less than a week, firing the weapons into the waters off its west coast. South Korea’s military “detected several unknown cruise missiles launched into the West Sea of North Korea around 07:00 [22:00 GMT].

5. Spanish farmers’ associations said, they are planning to take to the streets in coming weeks in protest against strict European regulations and lack of government support. Drought in southern Spain has hit farmers, with production of several crops.

6. Elon Musk has said his Neuralink startup installed a brain implant in its first human patient with “promising” initial results. The neurotechnology company co-founded by Musk aims to build direct communication channels between the brain and computers. The ambition is to supercharge human capabilities, treat neurological disorders like ALS or Parkinson’s, and maybe one day achieve a symbiotic relationship between humans and artificial intelligence.

7. The military regimes ruling Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger have announced their immediate withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The surprise exit is being called a “sovereign decision” taken without delay.
