1. The Australian Air Force on Monday airlifted the emergency relief consignment worth USD 1 million assistance given by India to Papua New Guinea in its swift response to the needs of the island country.

Earlier last month, in continuation of India’s commitment to providing relief to the people of Papua New Guinea affected by the volcanic eruption, a special charter flight, loaded with supplies, took off from New Delhi.

2. India has pledged to assist in the rescue of six Sri Lankan fishermen captured by the Somali pirates. The multi-day fishing trawler Lorenzo Putha-4 set sail from Dikowita fishing harbour in Sri Lanka on 16 January.

3. Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra is on an official visit to Bhutan from January 29 to 31. He will call on newly-elected Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, Foreign Minister Lyonpo DN Dhungyel and Bhutan King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck.

4. The Indian envoy to Bhutan, Sudhakar Dalela, called on the newly-elected Prime Minister of Bhutan, Tshering Tobgay and conveyed the greetings of India’s leadership for assuming responsibility as the Bhutanese PM.Ambassador Dalela also affirmed country’s commitment to working closely to foster India-Bhutan ties.

1. The main opposition party of the Maldives, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which holds a majority in Parliament, has gathered enough signatures to submit a motion to impeach Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu.

2. Israeli strikes in Syria on Monday (Jan 29) killed at least seven people, including pro-Iran fighters. The incident took place just two days after three US troops were killed in a drone attack on a military outpost in Jordan, which heightened regional tensions.

3. South Africa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC) suspended the country’s former president Jacob Zuma from the party on Monday and vowed to launch a legal challenge against a rival group campaigning in his name.

4. Japan has declared its decision to align with a cohort of nations and the suspension of financial support to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

5. The United Kingdom, on Monday (Jan 29) is likely to announce plans to ban the sale of disposable vapes in a bid to curb youth vaping. The measures will also include making vaping less appealing to children by imposing restrictions on vape flavours.

Vaping is the inhaling of an aerosol (mist) created by an electronic cigarette (e-cigarette).

6. French farmers on Monday (Jan 29) started blocking several motorways around Paris, demanding better working conditions, higher pay and less red tape. Farmers in France, say they are not being paid enough and are choked by excessive regulation on environmental protection.

French farmers assert that higher prices for fertilizer, energy and other inputs for growing crops and feeding livestock have eaten into their incomes.

7. Four members of Myanmar’s security services, including Brigadier General Aye Min Naung, were shot dead by a sniper as their helicopter prepared to land near the Thai border. The incident occurred in eastern Thingannyinaung town.

8. Iran executed four men, accusing them of planning sabotage and having links with Israel’s Mossad. The individuals were convicted of targeting an Iranian defense ministry factory in 2022, allegedly with Mossad’s involvement.

9. Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian on Monday arrived in Islamabad on the invitation of his Pakistani counterpart Jalil Abbas Jilani, amid strain in relations following the recent tit-for-tat strikes launched by the two countries.

10. Two people were injured in a grenade attack on the National Party’s election office in Baluchistan’s Mastung on Sunday.
