1. India is reportedly accelerating the revival of a long-defunct airfield in Tripura in a calibrated response to reports that China is aiding the development of a World War II-era airbase in Bangladesh’s Lalmonirhat district, less than 20 kilometres from the Indian border.

The renewed interest in Kailashahar comes amid growing unease in New Delhi over the potential strategic implications of the Chinese-backed upgrade of Lalmonirhat airbase in northern Bangladesh. The site lies in close proximity to the Siliguri Corridor, Chicken Neck.

2. External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar has said that India’s right to defend its people against acts of terror has been recognised by countries across the world. Addressing a program at the Embassy of Italy to celebrate the Italian National Day in New Delhi, Dr Jaishankar appreciated Italy’s solidarity and support to India following the barbaric terror attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir.

3. Russia’s Ambassador to India, Denis Alipov, lauded PM Modi’s leadership and said Prime Minister Modi’s strong leadership is steering the country toward global prominence.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has recently expressed a renewed willingness to engage in dialogue with India to resolve longstanding disputes, including the contentious issues of Kashmir, water-sharing, and trade. During a joint press conference with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Tehran, Sharif emphasised Pakistan’s readiness to seek peaceful solutions through negotiations.

6. The Philippines has introduced two new visa-free entry options for Indian travellers. Starting in May 2025, eligible Indian citizens can travel to the country for either 14 or 30 days without requiring a visa, depending on their passport and residency status.

1. The German Cabinet has approved two draft bills aimed at tightening the country’s migration laws, including restricting family reunification for certain refugees and ending the fast-track citizenship process for well-integrated migrants.

4. Sri Lanka has crossed the one million mark in international tourist arrivals this year. Provisional data from the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) showed 1,006,097 visitors recorded between January 1 and May 25.

India continued to lead as the top source market in May, contributing 35.8% of arrivals, followed by the UK and China. Sri Lanka has now met 33.5% of its 3 million visitor target for the year.

5. Sudan is facing a severe cholera outbreak as reported by the health ministry. The country has recorded 2,700 infections and 172 deaths within a week. Khartoum state is the most affected area, accounting for 90 percent of these cases.

6. In a collaborative move to eliminate kala-azar, six East African nations — Chad, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, and Sudan — signed a joint agreement during a WHO-AU side event at the 78th World Health Assembly in Geneva. The MoU aims to increase investment and cross-border coordination.
