1. Indian Coast Guard rescued nine Indian crew members from a sunken vessel, MSV Taj Dhare Haram on Thursday. The vessel was located nearly 311 kilometers west of Porbandar, Gujarat.

2. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently received the Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi National Eminence Award for Public Leadership, presented by the South Indian Education Society (SIES), one of India’s oldest educational institutions.

3. China has approved the construction of the world’s largest dam, stated to be the planet’s biggest infra project costing $137 billion, on the Brahmaputra River in Tibet close to the Indian border, raising concerns in riparian states — India and Bangladesh.

4. India has experienced a notable decrease in domestic migration, with recent data indicating that the number of domestic migrants fell by nearly 12% from 2011 to 2023. The Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council (EAC-PM) reported that the total number of migrants in 2023 stands at approximately 40.20 crore.

1. Japan Airlines flight operations were affected this morning after a cyberattack caused a system malfunction. The airline said it led to the cancellation of several domestic and international flights and more than 60 delays. Flight services have now resumed.

2. The bald eagle, a symbol of the power and strength of the United States for more than 240 years, earned an overdue honor. It officially became the country’s national bird. President Joe Biden signed into law legislation sent to him by Congress that amends the United States Code to correct what had long gone unnoticed and designate the bald eagle – familiar to many because of its white head, yellow beak and brown body – as the national bird.

3. In Nepal, the government’s new ordinance on cooperatives, which includes rules for regulating cooperatives and returning the savings of members, will be sent to the President. The ordinance comes in response to suggestions from a parliamentary committee investigating cooperatives. It sets criteria for returning savings of up to 500,000 Nepali rupees deposited in cooperatives.

4. More than 1,500 prisoners have escaped from a prison in Mozambique, taking advantage of ongoing political unrest triggered by disputed election results.

5. Aisake Valu Eke has recently been appointed as the Prime Minister of Tonga, replacing Hu’akavameiliku Siaosi Sovaleni, who resigned on December 9.
