Rising North East Investors Summit

1. The Rising North East Investors Summit 2025 which was held in New Delhi, attracted investment proposals worth over 4 Lakh Crore rupees. Delegations from over 80 countries, from Japan to Europe to ASEAN nations, participated in the two day summit which culminated on 24 May.

2. India is set to submit a dossier to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) to advocate for Pakistan’s reinstatement on the “grey list“.

(a) Impacts of Greylisting
Being placed on the grey list can have severe economic repercussions. It affects foreign investment and international aid inflows. For instance, India has noted that Pakistan’s greylisting from 2018 to 2022 helped reduce illicit fund flows into regions like Jammu and Kashmir.

(b) The Black List
The black list includes countries with serious deficiencies in their financial regulations. Currently, North Korea, Myanmar, and Iran are on this list. Countries in this category face mandatory economic sanctions, and other nations are urged to apply enhanced due diligence when interacting with them.

(c) What is the FATF?
The FATF is a global watchdog focused on money laundering and terror financing. Established in 1989, it comprises 40 members, including key nations worldwide. The organisation’s primary aim is to combat financial crimes by promoting international standards and assessing the effectiveness of countries’ measures against these crimes. Currently, 24 countries are on this list.

2. An all-party Indian parliamentary delegation led by Congress MP Dr. Shashi Tharoor arrived in Guyana. Team will convey India’s unequivocal message of zero tolerance for terrorism.

3. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Sunday had a telephonic conversation with his Canadian counterpart Anita Anand and the two leaders discussed strengthening the relationship between the two countries.

4. Maldives Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel will be on a three-day visit to India to Boost Bilateral Ties.

5. Social media platform X services have remained down for the longest period ever, with users reporting glitches on the platform for the third day in a row. Elon Musk-led X started facing a glitch on May 22 due to data centre outage and remained down in several parts of the globe including in India on Saturday as well.

1. In Ukraine, at least 12 people were killed and dozens of others injured in a combined missile-drone attack by Russia.

2. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s helicopter was caught in the “epicentre” of a massive Ukrainian drone offensive during his first visit to the liberated Kursk Region earlier this week. A Russian military commander revealed that air defence units in the region managed to beat off the attack and ensured the safety of the President.

3. USA President Donald Trump said Sunday that the U.S. will delay implementation of a 50% tariff on goods from the European Union from June 1 until July 9 to buy time for negotiations with the bloc.

4. The Walmart Boycott is back. The world’s largest retailer faces renewed calls for a nationwide boycott led by The People’s Union USA, the same group behind the weeklong protest in April. The organizers are urging consumers to shun Walmart and its subsidiaries, including Sam’s Club, Walmart Pharmacy, and Walmart+, citing ongoing concerns over the company’s labor practices and community impact.

5. US President Donald Trump’s now-aborted move to rename the Persian Gulf as the ‘Arabian Gulf’ or ‘Gulf of Arabia’ stirred sharp condemnation from Iranian officials.

6. At least 18 people were killed and nearly 100 injured in separate storm-related incidents across Pakistan’s Punjab province. According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority, most of the fatalities occurred due to the collapse of dilapidated buildings and unsafe structures.
