1. An international conference titled ‘Sun, Space Weather, and Solar-Stellar Connections’ was held in Bengaluru from January 20 to 24, 2025, to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the Kodaikanal Solar Observatory (KSO). Organized by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), the event gathered over 200 solar physicists from India and abroad to discuss advancements in solar magnetism, solar-stellar connections, and space weather.

2. India and Indonesia exchange five bilateral agreements including digital development, health cooperation, maritime safety and security.

3. The US Supreme Court has cleared the extradition of Mumbai terror attack convict Tahawwur Rana to India as it dismissed a review petition against his conviction in the case. India was seeking the extradition of Pakistani-origin Canadian businessman Rana, who is accused of playing a major role in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks which claimed the lives of 160 people.

4. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri will be on a two-day visit to China from today (Sunday) for a meeting of the Foreign Secretary-Vice Minister mechanism between India and China.

2. Thailand became the first Southeast Asian nation to legalize same-sex marriage, marking a significant victory for LGBTQ+ rights in the region. The Marriage Equality Act, which was overwhelmingly passed by Parliament in June 2024 and ratified by King Maha Vajiralongkorn in September 2024, grants same-sex couples the same legal, financial, and medical rights as heterosexual couples.

3. U.S. President Donald Trump took significant steps towards reshaping the nation’s cryptocurrency regulations, fulfilling his promise to overhaul U.S. crypto policy quickly. The executive order laid out the creation of a cryptocurrency working group with a primary focus on proposing new digital asset regulations and exploring the possibility of creating a national cryptocurrency stockpile.

4. Pete Hegseth appointed as next U.S. Defence Secretary. The confirmation for appointment of Hegseth came after a 50-50 vote in the Senate, when Vice President JD Vance broke the tie in his role as president of the Senate.
