1. In 2024, from May 20th to 30th, India will hold the important 46th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM 46) and the 26th Meeting of the Committee for Environmental Protection (CEP 26). These meetings will take place in Kochi, Kerala.

2. Delhi has achieved the best ranking among Indian cities in the 2024 Oxford Economics Global Cities Index, positioned at 350th. This index analyzes the global standing of 1,000 cities based on several pivotal categories.

3. In the case of the alleged plot to kill Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, the top court in Czech Republic has rejected a petition by Indian national Nikhil Gupta against his extradition to the US. Now the nation’s justice minister will have to take a call on the actual extradition.

4. The United States is all set to send an Indian astronaut to the International Space Station by the end of 2024, revealed US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti.

The US envoy further said that by the end of this year, the NISAR project, a joint Earth-observing mission between the US space agency NASA and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), will most likely be launched.

5. India will host the first dedicated discussions on regulating Antarctic tourism at the 46th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM) and the 26th Meeting of the Committee for Environmental Protection (CEP). The National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), Goa, under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, and the Antarctic Treaty Secretariat will organise these meetings in Kochi, Kerala, from 20 May to 30 May 2024.

1. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s flagship bill aimed at banning smoking anyone aged 15 and under from ever buying cigarettes appears to be shelved after he called a surprise July general election as there’s not much time for bills to be made into law.

2. President Ebrahim Raisi on Thursday (May 23) was buried in the Iranian holy city of Mashhad, four days after he died in a helicopter crash.

3. Chinese citizen journalist Zhang Zhan has been released from prison after serving four years for her coverage of Beijing’s Covid-19 response.

4. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack targeting tourists in Afghanistan’s Bamiyan that killed six and injured many others. In a statement on Telegram, ISIS said that its fighters shot at Christian tourists and their Shiite companions with machine guns. Six people- three Spaniards and three Afghans- were killed.

5. The European Union has given the final green light to the AI Act, marking a historic step in regulating artificial intelligence. This groundbreaking legislation establishes comprehensive rules to ensure trust, transparency, and accountability in AI technologies while fostering innovation within Europe.

6. UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Myanmar Tom Andrews on Thursday appealed to the Bangladesh Government to “reverse its closed border policy’ and demonstrate their humanitarian support for the Rohingya once again.

7. Israel War cabinet has approved new guidelines regarding the hostage-ceasefire indirect talks with Hamas. At least 128 hostages are still in Hamas custody.
