1. Nepal’s Ministry of Health and Population has imported Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines administered against cervical cancer with the assistance of the Global Alliance for Vaccine and Immunization (GAVI). GAVI will provide only 1.77 million vaccines to Nepal.
2. Romania’s president nominated incumbent Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu to lead a new pro-European coalition government following a top court’s annulment of a presidential election.
3. US President Joe Biden commuted the sentences of 37 of the 40 federal inmates on death row, converting their punishments to life imprisonment without parole. The announcement comes just weeks before President-elect Donald Trump, an outspoken proponent of expanding capital punishment, takes office on the 20th of next month.
4. Nepal celebrates the 101st birth anniversary of the founding leader of the Nepali Congress (NC), Krishna Prasad Bhattarai. He is popularly known as Kisunji in the political sphere. Bhattarai twice served as the Prime Minister of Nepal, once heading the interim government from 19 April 1990 to 26 May 1991, and then as elected Prime Minister from 31 May 1999 to 22 March 2000.
5. In Brazil, a small plane crashed into a tourist hotspot in the city of Gramado. The crash killed all 10 people on board and injured more than a dozen people on the ground.
