1. French President Emmanuel Macron will be the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations next January, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced.

2. The Government of India signed an agreement with Asian Development Bank to avail one hundred million US dollar loan, to improve urban services and tourism facilities in the northeastern state of Tripura.

3. The U.N. Security Council has adopted a watered-down resolution calling for immediate speeded-up aid deliveries to hungry and desperate civilians in Gaza – but without the original call for an “urgent suspension of hostilities” between Israel and Hamas

4. The long-delayed vote in the 15-member council was 13-0 with the United States and Russia abstaining. The vote came immediately after the United States vetoed a Russian amendment that would have restored the call to immediately suspend hostilities. That vote was 10 countries in favor, the U.,S. against and four abstentions.

5. The final-vote U.S. abstention avoided a second American veto of a Gaza resolution following Hamas’ surprise Oct. 7 attacks inside Israel. A relieved U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield told the council after the resolution’s adoption: “This was tough, but we got there.”

1. Israeli Air Force bombed Hezbollah military targets and infrastructure in Lebanon.

2. At least five labourers were gunned down in the Shin Warsak neighbourhood of South Waziristan in Pakistan by unknown assailants.

3. United Nations Security Council has passed a resolution on the Gaza war but has stopped short of calling for a ceasefire. The resolution ‘demands’ that all sides in the war “allow and facilitate the use of all… routes to and throughout the entire Gaza Strip, including border crossings… for the provision of humanitarian assistance.”

4. 14 people were killed while over two dozen suffered injuries in a mass shooting at the Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic on Thursday (Dec 21). The shooter has been identified as 24-year-old history student David Kozak who died during the attack.

5. Air pollution in China worsened this year, for the first time in decades, a study said on Friday (Dec 22). The study conducted by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) said that 80% of provincial capitals including Beijing saw an increase in Particulate Matter (PM2.5) this year.
