1. PM Modi will be on a three-day visit to the United States from the 21st to the 23rd of this month, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said, during the visit, Prime Minister Modi will take part in the Quad Leaders’ Summit in Wilmington, Delaware, on Saturday.

2. The 7th edition of the Sharjah Investment Forum (SIF 2024) meeting concluded yesterday, after two days of intense discussions on “A Futuristic Vision for Smart Economies.” The forum saw a significant presence of Indian business leaders and investors.

A key session titled “CEPA: Unlocking New Horizons for Bilateral Trade and Investment” focused on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement between the two countries.

3. India on Thursday dismissed a report by news agency Reuters regarding the diversion of defence exports to Ukraine as “speculative and misleading.”

A Reuters report stated that artillery shells sold by Indian arms manufacturers had been diverted by European customers to Ukraine, with New Delhi not intervening to stop the trade despite protests from Russia.

4. The Union Cabinet chaired by PM Modi has approved the development of Next Generation Launch Vehicle (NGLV), that will be a significant step towards the Government’s vision of establishing & operating the Bharatiya Antariksh Station and towards developing capability for Indian Crewed Landing on the Moon by 2040.

5. India has officially informed Pakistan about changes it wants to make to the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), citing unexpected and significant reasons. This notice was given under Article XII(3) of the treaty, which allows changes to be made through a new agreement between the two countries. India had already sent a notice in January 2023 because of ongoing arguments about Indian hydropower projects.

1. Preparations are underway in Sri Lanka for the Presidential elections scheduled for Saturday.

2. The World Health Organization, WHO declared Jordan as the first country in the world to eliminate leprosy, marking a significant milestone in global public health efforts.

3. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced a 10-billion-euro funding package from the European Union (EU) to support central European countries struggling with the worst flooding in decades.

4. Canada has announced a further reduction of international students to manage the volume of temporary resident arrivals.

The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) notice, released on 18 September 2024, announced a further 10 per cent reduction in study permits for international students in 2025. The reduction has been made from the 2024 target of 485,000 new study permits issued.

5. Ukraine’s parliament amended the 2024 budget to allocate an additional about 11.96 billion U.S. dollars for defence, the country’s Finance Ministry has said.

6. Authorities in Israel said on Thursday (Sep 19) that the police arrested an Israeli citizen last month who was recruited by Iranian intelligence to plot the assassinations of top Israeli officials including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

7. Israel on Thursday (Sep 19) bombed specific locations in southern Lebanon in overnight attacks, and the Israeli military later said that it struck six Hezbollah “terrorist infrastructure sites” and a weapons storage facility.
