1. The long-awaited ceasefire deal between Israel and the Palestinian armed group Hamas commenced yesterday in the Gaza Strip, marking a potential turning point in the 15-month conflict that has claimed thousands of lives.
The Palestinian militant outfit Hamas handed over three Israeli women hostages to the IDF (military) through the Red Cross on Sunday as part of the Gaza ceasefire deal.
2. The United Nations has said that trucks carrying humanitarian aid entered Gaza after a truce between Israel and Hamas went into effect. Efforts are also underway for the release of hostages.
3. Millions of TikTok users in the United States are no longer able to watch or share videos on the social media platform as a federal ban on the popular app takes effect.
4. In Iran, two judges were killed in a shooting attack on 18 Jan at the Supreme Court building in Tehran. State media reported that three Supreme Court judges were targeted. Two were killed on the spot, and one other judge was injured.
5. In Bangladesh, the constitution reform commission, appointed by the Nobel Peace laureate Dr Mohammad Yunus administration, recommended the removal of “secularism”, “nationalism” and “socialism” from the Constitution. The commission, led by Prof Ali Riaz, also proposed a bicameral parliament for the country, a two-term limit on a premier’s tenure and reinstatement of the provision for a referendum to amend the constitution.
