1. In Bangladesh, the interim government led by Prof. Mohammad Yunus has again extended the magistracy power given to commissioned officers of the armed forces by 60 days. The new extension will come into effect from January 14 aiming to maintain law and order across Bangladesh.
2. In US, the outgoing US President, Joe Biden, awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom with distinction to Pope Francis on a phone call.
3. In Pakistan, the death toll in a coal mine collapse due to an explosion and methane gas accumulation has risen to 11. The rescuers recovered seven more dead bodies in a coal mine in Balochistan province.
4. In the US, the death toll from the wildfires in Los Angeles rose to 16. Of the fatalities, five were discovered in the Palisades Fire zone, while 11 were from the Eaton Fire zone.
5. Sri Lanka’s Revised Vehicle Import Taxes Set to Raise Prices by 20% Starting February. Excise duties between 200 percent and 300 percent will apply, based on engine cylinder capacities and motor power.
6. Mount Ibu, located in North Maluku, Indonesia, erupted recently, sending ash clouds up to 3 kilometres high. This eruption is part of a larger pattern of volcanic activity in the region, which is known for its geological volatility.
