India ASEAN and East Asia summits

1. PM Modi has arrived in 🇱🇦Laos for a two-day visit to attend the India-ASEAN and East Asia summits.

2. Highlighting the importance of ties between India and ASEAN countries, Prime Minister Modi said trade with the ASEAN region has almost doubled to over 130 billion dollars in the past ten years. He said, India has direct flight connectivity with seven ASEAN countries, and soon direct flights will start with Brunei.

The 44th and 45th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summits and related summits kicked off in Vientiane, Laos.

3. Indian Ambassador to Lao PDR, Prashant Agrawal, on Thursday, stated that the Act East policy, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, has brought about a transformational change in India’s engagement not only with ASEAN countries but also with the wider Indo-Pacific region.

4. The President Smt Droupadi Murmu will be on a visit to three African nations; Algeria, Mauritania and Malawi from October 13-19.

5. Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu emphasised India’s role as a leader in technology and innovation as the island nation stands on the brink of a digital-revolution.Speaking at the India-Maldives Business Forum in Bengaluru on Wednesday.

🌎 WORLD NEWS 🌍

1. The 2024 Nobel Prize in literature has been awarded to South Korean author Han Kang “for her intense poetic prose that confronts historical traumas and exposes the fragility of human life.”

2. Marking the seventh day of the ongoing 10-day-long Dashain festival in Nepal, the Phulpati ceremony is observed yesterday. Dashain is the biggest festival in 🇳🇵Nepal.

3. In 🇺🇸USA, more than three million homes and businesses are now without power in Florida after Hurricane Milton slammed into Florida’s west coast last night as a Category 3 storm.

4. Sri Lanka, nominations for the upcoming general election will close at noon on Friday. The Election Commission has issued guidelines to the parties submitting national list candidates.

The general election is scheduled for 14th of November to elect 225 Parliamentarians out of which 29 members belong to the National list. A national list member of parliament is a nominated member of parliament who is appointed by a political party or an independent group to the Parliament of Sri Lanka.

5. The UN General Assembly elected 18 members to the 47-member Human Rights Council for the 2025-2027 term. The 18 countries, including Benin, Bolivia, Colombia, Cyprus, Qatar, and Thailand, were elected by a secret ballot yesterday. The elected members will serve three-year terms beginning on January 1 next year.

6. At least 15 people were killed and 10 others injured in a collision between a bus carrying passengers and a truck in Cameroon’s South region.

7. Israel’s military has claimed that Adham Jahout, a militant with Hezbollah’s Golan Terrorist Network in Syria, was killed in the airstrike in the area of Quneitra, Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

8. US President Joe Biden held a conversation over the phone with his Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The conversation covered a range of issues, with a particular focus on the ongoing West Asia conflict involving Iran.

9. North Korea announced to completely separate its territory from the South by cutting off all road and rail links and building fortifications on its side. Its military said the North will permanently shut off and block the southern border.

10. The Central Bank of Sri Lanka has given necessary recommendations to the Finance Ministry on the import of vehicles without affecting Sri Lanka’s foreign reserves.
