1. External Affairs Minister, Dr. S Jaishankar met UN General Assembly, President Philemon Yang in New Delhi. They discussed various issues on the UN agenda, including the need for reformed multilateralism.

2. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed sadness over the demise of Prince Karim Aga Khan IV. Prince Karim Al-Husseini known as the Aga Khan IV was the 49th imam of Isma’ilism from 1957 until his death in 2025. Aga Khan IV was also known by the religious title Mawlānā Hazar Imam by his Isma’ili followers.

3. A US aircraft carrying 104 illegal Indian immigrants landed at the Shri Guru Ramdas Ji International Airport in Amritsar yesterday afternoon. According to sources, 30 of the deportees are from Punjab, while others are from Chandigarh, Haryana, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh.

1. Palestinian leaders, along with regional leaders from countries such as Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia, have rejected US President Donald Trump’s recent proposal to have the United States “take over” the Gaza Strip, calling it a violation of Palestinian rights and international law.

2. The South Korean foreign and trade ministries blocked access to the Chinese artificial intelligence tool DeepSeek on ministry computers connected to external networks.

3. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has committed an additional 1.7 billion dollars in funding to strengthen Medicare and support public hospitals across the country. This funding boost aims to reduce waiting times, cut waiting lists, and manage the pressure on emergency departments.

4. Aga Khan IV, spiritual leader of Ismaili Muslims, passes away at 88 in Portugal. He became an imam at age 20. He led the Aga Khan Development Network, improving health, education, and livelihoods in 30 countries. He succeeded his grandfather as imam of the Ismaili Muslims in 1957 at the age of 20.

Rahim Al-Hussaini has been appointed as the new Aga Khan, the spiritual leader for millions of Ismaili Muslims worldwide. He was named Aga Khan V, becoming the 50th hereditary imam of the Shiite Ismaili Muslims, as per his father’s will. His father passed away on Tuesday in Portugal.

5. Singapore has passed a new law to safeguard racial harmony and protect against foreign interference. The legislation requires race-based groups, such as clan and business associations, to disclose foreign donations and empowers authorities to act against content that threatens racial harmony.

6. In Sri Lanka, over 5000 dengue cases and two dengue-related deaths have been reported over the month of January. The National Dengue Control Unit reports that 5459 dengue cases have been recorded and it has identified 16 high-risk dengue zones across the country.

7. A large group of protesters on Wednesday vandalised and set on fire Bangladesh founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s residence in Dhaka during a live online address of his daughter and deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

8. Tshego Gaelae, a native of Soweto, has made history as the first Black woman to be crowned Mrs World 2025 at the grand finale in Las Vegas. The 34-year-old attorney and reigning Mrs South Africa 2024 follows in the footsteps of Candice Abrahams, the only other South African to win the title in 2016.

9. On February 4, 2025, China announced new counter tariffs against the United States in response to recent tariff hikes imposed by the U.S. government. These tariffs include a 15% levy on coal and liquefied natural gas, and a 10% tariff on crude oil, agricultural machinery, and large-displacement cars.
