Following the recent terror attack at Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, China has stood up in support of Pakistan, stressing the importance of “restraint” and “dialogue” between India and Pakistan. The Chinese foreign ministry, in its formal statement, described the situation as “sensitive” and hoped that both countries would try to maintain regional stability.
Beijing emphasizes peaceful settlement
Emphasizing its long-standing position, Beijing called on New Delhi and Islamabad to resolve their differences peacefully. “We hope relevant parties will not take actions that would increase tensions and instead solve problems through communication and negotiation,” a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson stated at a news briefing.
China’s response has come under scrutiny, particularly as the world has universally criticized terrorism after the Pahalgam massacre. Although China did not explicitly mention the attack or criticize terrorism in general, its appeal for restraint was interpreted as an indirect defense of Pakistan at a moment when India blamed Pakistan-based outfits for masterminding the violence.
Diplomatic tightrope amid rising tensions
The Pahalgam attack has once again heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, with New Delhi taking strong diplomatic measures, including suspending visas for Pakistani nationals. Meanwhile, China’s response is being closely watched, given its strategic ties with Pakistan through projects like the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
Commentators think that Beijing’s statement is intended to preserve its own power in the area without specifically denouncing either side. Still, India’s increasing irritation over China’s unwillingness to outright condemn terrorism as a threat could tighten relations between New Delhi and Beijing.
Anti-terror moves sought worldwide
Many nations, such as the United States, France, and Australia, have condemned the Pahalgam terror attack in strong terms and reaffirmed their support for India in the war against terrorism. India’s Ministry of External Affairs will make a formal response to China’s remarks in the next few days.
Tensions are still prevalent, with the international community hoping that diplomacy and dialogue will triumph so that tensions will not escalate further in the region.
