On June 2, 2025, 17-year-old TikTok influencer Sana Yousaf was fatally shot in her Islamabad home. Known for her engaging content on women’s rights and cultural identity, Sana had amassed over a million followers across social media platforms. Her sudden death has sent shockwaves through Pakistan and the global digital community.

The Crime and the Accused

As per the reports by the police, Sana was at home with her aunt when her cousin, Umar Hayat—and also referred to by his nickname “Kaka”—dropped by. After a short conversation, during which Sana allegedly told him to leave, he shot her twice in the chest at point-blank range, killing her instantly. Hayat escaped but was arrested within 24 hours in Faisalabad. He admitted to the crime, explaining that he had been constantly turned down by Sana, prompting him to do what he did.

A Life of Advocacy and Influence

Born June 2, 2007, in Upper Chitral, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sana migrated with her family to Islamabad, where she studied medical sciences. Following her father’s association with social activism, she became a well-known social media personality, promoting regional culture and women’s rights on her pages. Her last Instagram post, posted mere hours before her death, had her celebrating the birthday of her 17th year by cutting cake.

Public outcry and Call for Justice

The killing has evoked mass outrage and grief all over Pakistan. The social media was filled with the trending hashtag #JusticeForSanaYousaf as people mourned and called for justice. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi appreciated the prompt action of law officers, but Islamabad Inspector General Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi termed the suspect a “cold-blooded murderer” motivated by constant rejections. Ume-Laila Azhar, National Commission on the Status of Women Chairperson, brought attention to the incident as representative of violence women endure within patriarchal states and urged systemic reforms to ensure that women are safeguarded against such acts.

Wider Consequences

Sana Yousaf’s untimely death highlights the vulnerabilities of women, particularly those in the limelight, in conservative societies. It has again brought to the fore debates regarding the safety of content creators and the necessity of change within society to keep them safe from gender-based violence. While investigations remain ongoing, her family and followers are hoping for justice to be meted out and that she will be remembered as a means to ensure a better life for women to live in Pakistan.
