Quite content

Quite content

Quite content and joyously I read
in my pallor every day in solitude
escaping to meadows
at intervals keeping
my friendship with nature, birds
and animals vigorous.

But things began to shift when
nonnative eyes fell on us. They
envied what we had: peace.

They asked for it in utter sincerity.
And we shared our space, opened
our gates and hearts to them.

They entered with pride, not grace.
Something already had changed in
their minds.

And then one night they charged off
what we had.
They took it all away
without asking
if it is their right to do so.

We were all scattered by then.
Pages of books were torn and
meanings lost.

We have to begin again from scratch.
We have to forget and forgive
in the meantime.
