Lingering Death by Prerna Gupta

Lingering Death

Death is lingering on the
door, I can see its shadow
falling on the gate of
my home.

I am afraid to look out of
the window, and forbid everyone
to do the same, with the intention,
that it will eventually leave getting
tired.

But even I know instinctively, it has
already arrived so, it won’t depart
alone. It needs a soul to carry,
a flesh and a heart with a pulse
to end and burn.

I wish death knew the significance
of trade and profit. I would have traded
my soul for the other. Because that
other has brought me up, fed me,
nourished me, taught me to live,
love, and laugh, molded me into
the person I am today and
my career path.

I wish there were a way, I could switch
places with him as a small gift for
everything that soul has
done for me.
