All five were taken to hospital shortly after the accident, where two are said to be still serious. The victims were named as individuals who had been residing in make-shift shelters while working in the city.

Driver Under the Influence, Arrested on the Spot

Police identified the driver as Utsav Shekhar, who is a 40-year-old Dwarka resident. He was allegedly drunk at the time of the accident. His vehicle, after running over the victims in their sleep, kept moving and finally crashed into a stationary truck, causing the vehicle to halt. Police arrested Shekhar on the spot and proved his state of intoxication by medical tests.

Area eyewitnesses rushed to the aid of the injured and alerted the police. Police and emergency services arrived without delay, and the victims were shifted to nearby hospitals. The Audi has been impounded, and a probe is underway. The authorities are also examining CCTV footage and tracing the movement of the car in the run-up to the accident.

A case has been filed against Shekhar under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, including those for reckless and negligent driving. The police are also probing if the driver had a track record of such offenses or traffic infractions.
