New delhi:- Delhi is currently facing three grave environmental crises that raise serious health concerns: alarming air pollution, toxic froth in the Yamuna River, and unprecedented increases in vector-borne diseases.
Worsening Air Quality
Delhi’s air quality has sunk to the “severe” category with winter fast approaching, as increased industrial emissions, vehicular pollution, and seasonal crop stubble burning have all combined to poison the sky. The Air Quality Index in several parts of the National Capital Region has crossed hazardous levels, which causes respiratory issues, especially in children and the elderly. This poor air quality, among other issues, has also added to the reputation of Delhi as one of the world’s most polluted cities.
Frothy Yamuna
In tandem with the present air pollution crisis, another critical health hazard is offered to Delhi through the Yamuna River. The river is rich in froth thanks to untreated industrial discharge and excessive chemical content such as ammonia and phosphates and comes to encompass all the pollutants of the world. This froth, more visible during festivals such as Chhath Puja, is both damaging to the people who bathe in the Ganga for religious purposes and also causes deterioration in their skin and respiratory conditions.
Increase in Vector-Borne Diseases
Complicating things further, vector-borne diseases have increased manifold in Delhi. As reported in October, dengue, malaria, and chikungunya cases are at their peak over the last five years. This has come about due to stagnated water, mainly in frothy Yamuna patches and areas affected by air pollution, where mosquitoes are found breeding and multiplying in alarming numbers.
The Triple Threat
The Delhi government has several countermeasures in the offing, starting from expanding medical facilities for persons affected by pollution and vector-borne diseases. However, environmental activists stress that an integrated approach – stricter pollution controls, better waste management, and prompt medical intervention-could bring the risks to the residents of Delhi further down.
