Bengaluru Stampede Tragedy: Siddaramaiah Exposes Overcrowding as Cause of Panic

Bengaluru Stampede

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah finally reacted to the sad stampede incident during a government-arranged distribution function in Bengaluru, revealing the main reason for the incident. Addressing reporters, the CM assured that a sudden turn of almost 2 to 3 lakh people on the ground was the major reason why panic and chaos were created.

The event, which was part of a programme providing free household goods to Below Poverty Line (BPL) families, turned deadly when the gathering swelled uncontrollably. The event venue, which was said not to be equipped to accommodate so many people, witnessed stampedes at various entry points and left several people injured and at least two people dead, according to preliminary reports.

‘We Didn’t Expect This Much Crowd’: CM on Mismanagement Allegations

Siddaramaiah conceded that the administration had lowball estimates of the number of people coming and did not anticipate such a vast crowd. “We expected a big turnout, but not in lakhs,” he added, declaring that the crowd surpassed the intended capacity. The chief minister vowed that a proper probe would be held into the lapses and the authorities in charge of crowd management would be questioned.

Critics and opposition leaders, however, have lashed out at the state government, accusing it of poor planning and absence of safety measures at the venue. The event visuals indicated people climbing barricades and walls in desperation to reach the distribution counters.

Government Announces Compensation, Investigation Underway

As a response to the loss of life and the injuries, the state government announced ₹5 lakh compensation to the families of those who died. Free treatment in government hospitals will be provided for those injured. A committee has also been constituted to look into the administrative lapses responsible for the stampede.

The CM assured that such accidents should not recur and vowed stricter regulations for future government programmes. “The safety of the people is our first priority,” he said.

This tragic incident has triggered a debate about crowd management at government functions and alarm regarding the treatment of public welfare schemes at election time.
