Bengal Horror: Medical Student Gang Raped by Group of Men in Durgapur While Out with Friends for Dinner

Bengal Horror

In a horrifying incident in Durgapur, West Bengal, the safety of women in the state has come into question yet again. A 22-year-old medical student was gang-raped by a group of men on Sunday evening when she had gone out with friends for dinner near her college campus.

The Incident

Based on preliminary police statements, the survivor, a third-year student of a private medical college in Durgapur, had visited a restaurant with friends near the Bidhannagar area. While returning, she was allegedly picked up by a group of men standing near the restaurant and taken away in a vehicle. The accused took her to an isolated area and allegedly assaulted her.

The student was subsequently discovered by locals in a state of semi-consciousness and was immediately reported to the police. She was hurriedly taken to a nearby hospital, where she remains under treatment.
According to the doctors, she is stable but traumatized.

Police Investigation and Arrests

Four suspects who are suspected to be involved in the crime have been arrested by the Durgapur police. CCTV footage from the location and restaurant has been obtained for identification. “We are looking at all possible angles, including if the accused were familiar with the victim or if they had trailed her from the restaurant,” a senior officer stated.

A special investigation team (SIT) has been constituted to expedite the case. Police officials confirmed that gang rape, kidnapping, and criminal intimidation sections were also added to the FIR.

College, Locals in Shock

The chilling attack has shocked Durgapur, particularly the student community. Students at the medical college held a silent protest on Monday, seeking enhanced police patrolling and campus security.

Locals were also outraged, demanding tough action against the perpetrators. “If a medical student is not safe in front of her college, where are we going as a society?” asked a Bidhannagar resident.

Political Reactions and Public Outcry

Political representatives from all parties have denounced the event. Women’s rights organizations have called for the case to be heard in a fast-track court. The West Bengal Women’s Commission also took suo motu cognizance of the case and called for a report within 48 hours from the police.

As the probe goes on, Durgapur weeps another violent reminder of how precarious women’s security is — even in so-called safe learning environments.
