Fatal crash on Giridih-Dumri road
In a devastating accident in the early hours of Monday, a bus full of Kanwariyas was involved in a head-on collision with a truck on Jharkhand’s Giridih district, killing at least 18 individuals. The mishap took place near the Barbadda location on the Giridih-Dumri road. The victims were on a religious pilgrimage and had set out to return after bringing holy water from Baba Baidyanath Dham in Deoghar.
Pilgrims crushed in mangled bus
Officials said that the impact of the collision was so massive that some passengers were killed instantly, and others were trapped in the mangled bus. The locals and police evacuated the area and initiated rescue operations. The horrific images from the location indicated the front ends of the two vehicles being fully crushed.
There are a number of young pilgrims among the casualties
Among the dead were several young pilgrims, including teenagers. More than two dozen others were injured and taken to nearby hospitals, six in a critical condition. The number of passengers on the bus is yet to be confirmed. Authorities confirmed that the pilgrims were mostly from Garhwa and Palamu districts.
Driver fatigue suspected, probe ordered
Preliminary investigations indicate that the bus driver dozed off or lost control leading to the accident. Local authorities have opened an investigation into the actual cause. The two drivers are thought to be among the fatalities. Police have also taken the bodies for post-mortem and are in the process of identifying all the victims.
PM Modi, BJP leaders offer condolences
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the loss of lives and declared ex-gratia relief to the kin of the victims. BJP Palamu MP Vishnu Dayal Ram confirmed the number of casualties and visited the spot during the day. He described it as a “heartbreaking tragedy” and promised assistance to the families of victims.
State govt promises aid, safety checks
The government of Jharkhand has ordered emergency responders to administer the best possible treatment to the injured and provided compensation for the families of those who were killed. Authorities also intend to audit transport arrangements made for pilgrims at the current Kanwar Yatra, which witnesses a large number of devotees during the sacred month of Shravan.
The calamitous accident has put a shadow on the religious yatra and also generated new concerns regarding road safety for pilgrims.
