The much-anticipated Indian film Superboys of Malegaon, directed by Reema Kagti, will open the National Indian Film Festival of Australia (NIFFA) 2025. Inspired by a true story, the film is set in Malegaon, a small town in Maharashtra, and chronicles the life of Nasir Shaikh, an amateur filmmaker who, along with his friends, revitalizes the town by transforming it into a hub of filmmaking passion.
Running from February 13 to March 2, the pioneering first-of-its-kind festival is supported by key Indian institutions and major Australian entities like Dendy Cinemas. The Indian support includes the Indian High Commission in Australia, consulates of Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth, the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), SBS (Special Broadcasting Service – Australia), and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). It features an impressive lineup of over 35 world and Australian premieres of Indian films in 16 languages with 7 red carpets in seven cities of the opening night film Superboys of Malegaon. A first of its kind in Australia.
NIFFA 2025, Australia’s first and only annual national Indian film festival, is dedicated to celebrating the diversity of Indian cinema beyond Bollywood. With screenings in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Perth, Adelaide, and Canberra, the festival will feature a lineup of handpicked films from submissions from around the world.
The all-female nomination council, comprising prominent Australian Indian film professionals, will play a key role in shaping the festival’s vision.
Festival Founder and Director Anupam Sharma expressed his enthusiasm: “Our goal is to bring Indian cinema to the big screens in a big way, celebrating not just Bollywood but the vast storytelling landscape of India. Having Superboys of Malegaon as our opening film perfectly aligns with our mission to spotlight Indian filmmakers who push creative boundaries. NIFFA will take place in 7 cities (Sidney, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, and Canberra) with more than 40 films being screened with 3 world premieres and 36 Australian premieres.
Slated to release theatrically on February 28, An Excel Entertainment and Tiger Baby production, Superboys of Malegaon is produced by Ritesh Sidhwani, Farhan Akhtar, Zoya Akhtar, and Reema Kagti. The movie is directed by Reema Kagti and written by Varun Grover. . It features a highly talented ensemble cast, including Adarsh Gourav, Shashank Arora, Vineet Kumar Singh, Anuj Singh Duhan, Saqib Ayub, Pallav Singh, Manjiri Pupala, Muskkaan Jaferi and Riddhi Kumar.
