Aamir Khan’s new film, Sitaare Zameen Par, has opened to a cold response at the box office, with its Day 1 collections standing at an estimated ₹3.6 crore. The figure is far lower than both Laal Singh Chaddha and Sikandar, sparking doubts about whether Aamir is able to regain his box office supremacy.
Although there was good pre-release hype and Aamir’s comeback to the screen after almost two years, the movie could not draw massive audiences on the first day. Laal Singh Chaddha — although it encountered a boycott trend coupled with mixed reviews — had raked in ₹11.5 crore on Day 1 of 2022. Salman Khan’s recent action drama Sikandar, more recently, opened to the tune of approximately ₹6 crore.
Early trade reports suggest that Sitaare Zameen Par suffered from multiple challenges: low marketing visibility, competition from ongoing releases, and a growing weariness among audiences towards remakes. The film is an official adaptation of the Spanish hit Champions, which might not have been an exciting proposition for viewers already fatigued by predictable storylines.
Internationally as well, the film didn’t make a good impression. Overseas markets’ advance booking figures continued to lag behind estimates, an unexpected development given Aamir’s strong fan following overseas. This leaves the film heavily reliant on word-of-mouth and weekend expansion in Indian cinemas.
Aamir Khan, however, believes in the emotional connection of the movie. In interviews, he said Sitaare Zameen Par is not a “comeback” but a film that is close to his heart. He underlined that his aim isn’t just commercial success, but also storytelling that connects.
